Why does AI sound so confident even when it's wrong?

Author Answer:

If AI were a person, it would probably be the colleague who answers every question in a meeting with complete confidence. The only problem? Sometimes they're completely wrong. And somehow they still sound convincing. The reason is interesting. AI doesn't "know" an answer the way humans do. It generates responses by predicting what information is most likely to come next based on patterns it learned from massive amounts of data. That's why it can explain a complex topic beautifully and then confidently invent a fake research paper five minutes later. It's not lying. It's not trying to trick you. It's simply doing what it was designed to do: generate the most likely response. Humans naturally associate confidence with knowledge. If someone speaks clearly and confidently, we assume they understand the subject. AI exposes how easily we confuse communication with understanding. The next time an AI gives you a perfect answer, remember: A confident answer is not always a correct answer.
