Why do software updates always appear at the worst time?
Author Answer:
There is a strange relationship between humans and software updates.
We ignored the notification for three weeks.
Then, exactly when we need our laptop the most:
"Installing update 1 of 47."
Thank you. Excellent timing.
The funny thing is, your computer isn't actually trying to ruin your day.
Updates usually exist because developers found security issues, performance problems, or ways to improve the software.
The problem is that computers and humans have very different ideas about timing.
Your laptop sees:
"The device has been inactive."
You see:
"The five minutes before an important presentation."
This is one of the biggest challenges in technology.
Building software isn't only about making machines smarter.
It's about making machines understand humans better.
Because the best technology isn't the technology with the most features.
It's the technology that knows when to stay out of your way.
Built, not born.
